March
2007 Jazz Gumbo: Cornetist Charlie Cetti led his
Dixieland Dandies. There was a full house of around 200 in
Phineas Phogg's Room in Seville Quarter. Cetti did a "blow and
tell" session by explaining the significance of the early jazz
music, followed by the musical performance of the tune just
described. Academically, we likely had the most "degreed"
group ever on the Jazz Society stage. Cetti, a practicing
attorney, holds a Juris Doctor degree. Trombonist Don Lewis
holds Ph. D. in musicology and is a retired professor of music,
formerly from University of Mississippi. Soprano saxophonist
Lou Stalnaker is a medical doctor, a gynecologist and medical
educator. Tenor saxophonist George Viksne is an industrial
chemist who plays all the single reed family, clarinet and
saxophones, plus double-reeds oboe and English horn. Pianist
Bobby Van Deusen is a graduate of Ohio State. We remark that
his "senior recital" was completing a tour with Sammy Davis Jr. when
the original pianist was unable to complete the tour. Drummer
Larry Wojcik is a "snowbird" from Michigan.

October 2006 Jazz Gumbo:
The October Jazz Gumbo featured Pensacola/Nashville vocalist
Kitt
Lough. She performed with a jazz
ensemble led by pianist/arranger Dave
Shelander. The group included saxophonists Bob
Maksymkow and Sandy
Spivey and trumpeter Roger Villines. Other
instruments included trombone, bass and drums. There
was a large, enthusiastic crowd in spite of
inclement weather. They stayed until the last note
was sounded.

October 2005 Jazz Gumbo:
The October 2005 Jazz
Gumbo had approximately 170 attendees; many were first-timers. They
enjoyed the “Tribute to Louis Armstrong”
by Tallahassee trumpeter Longineu Parsons. Parsons had appeared at
a Pensacola JazzFest a couple of years ago. Since he is coach of
the trumpet section of the famous Florida A
& M Marching Band, he has a regular following in our area. Parsons
(as Armstrong) also sang. Note the
dancers on the floor enjoying the music.
A raffle was held
for the New Orleans musicians who were victims of Hurricane Katrina.
A total of $400 was sent to the New Orleans Musicians Clinic
( in exile at Lafayette, LA)
