After graduating from Pensacola High School, he obtained his A.A. degree from then Pensacola Junior College and later studied music at the University of West Florida. Jim transferred to the University of North Florida in Jacksonville where he studied under Barry Greene and obtained a degree in jazz guitar performance.

After music school, Jim obtained a law degree from Florida State University where he was a member of the law review and research assistant for professors Charles W. Ehrhardt and Dan Markel. Jim moved back to Pensacola in 2007 and has been practicing law and playing music whenever he gets the chance ever since.

Jim was one of the founding members of the board for the Belmont Youth Band, which is now known as the Pensacola Community Music School. Jim believes everyone from any background should have the opportunity to learn to make music.
